Miss Mildred Squeak
Once upon a time in a lovely place called Milton Keynes lived a very sweet little mouse called Miss Mildred Squeak. She lived in a tiny house made from torn up tissue paper, biscuit crumbs and PVA glue; it was decorated with an assortment of sequins, shiny gems and stickers of a curious design.
Miss Mildred Squeak was indeed a very busy mouse. When she wasn’t at home she could be found in one of the local supermarkets under the cheese counter eating all the crumbs of cheese that were constantly dropping on the floor.
When she got bored with eating cheese you would find her in the biscuit aisle, where she was rather partial to sesame seed crackers. Sometimes these were out of stock and when they were she would have a nibble of the oatcakes instead.
Then off she would run to the bottled drinks aisle, where she would find her favourite drink – fizzy cherryade. It took her a while to chew through the plastic bottle but it was worth the effort.
The one place she dared not go near was the very whiffy fish counter. The smell made her eyes water and left her gasping for air!
One day as she was sat on the shelf flossing her teeth in Aisle 17 (Health and Beauty), the store manager walked along and asked Miss Mildred Squeak if she would be interested in a job at the supermarket. Well that was a bit of a shock – have you ever heard of a mouse being offered a job in a supermarket?
“What would I have to do?” Miss Mildred Squeak said softly.
“Well as you are probably aware our supermarket is very large and sometimes children get separated from their parents. What I would like you to do is this. When you hear a missing child announcement on the tannoy system, go and locate the missing child and bring them back to Customer Services, where they can be reunited with their parent. It’s a very important job!” said the store manager.
“Thank you – I would love to do that job. When can I start?” asked Miss Mildred Squeak.
“As soon as we sort out a uniform for you. And how would you liked to be paid?” asked the store manager.
Miss Mildred Squeak was quick to reply “Food and drink, please!”
“That can be arranged very easily”, replied the store manager.
So there you are – if you happen to be out shopping in one of the local supermarkets in lovely Milton Keynes you might just see Miss Mildred Squeak on the hunt for missing children. And guess where she often finds them? Running up and down the escalators!
